A Season of Change
College is a season of change, independence, and new experiences. You knew this, but didn’t realize pregnancy would be part of it.
Take a moment to catch your breath and reflect on your goals.
- Did you ever want to have children?
- What is your relationship like with your partner?
- How far are you into your academic career?
- What do you truly want in the future?
While this change is unexpected, pregnancy and parenting during college are possible with the right resources and support.
Know Your Rights
The first step to navigating a pregnancy in college is educating yourself on the rights in which you are entitled.
According to Title IX Policy and the US Department of Education, you can receive no discrimination/removal from class or school activities based on pregnancy. This includes clubs, honors societies, and events.
In addition, the school must provide you with proper accommodations, such as a larger desk, elevator access, or more frequent restroom breaks. Your university must also honor any medical absence due to childbirth or other pregnancy-related doctor’s visit.
Harassment
Under Title IX policy, any discrimination based on sex, including pregnancy, is banned by your university. This includes rumors or demeaning comments about the pregnancy.
If you are subject to harassment, you can file a formal complaint through your school’s Title IX office or another appropriate channel.
Important Next Steps
The first step to your university experience as a pregnant or parenting student is to reach out to your college’s Title IX coordinator. You can speak with them about obtaining proper accommodations and protections as you enter this next stage of life.
Secondly, reach out to the Pregnancy Care Center of Rincon for additional resources. Pregnancy Care Center’s services are free and confidential.
