Am I pregnant? Could I have an STI? What should I do next? If your birth control recently failed, you’re likely asking all these questions and more. And you’re also probably feeling emotionally overwhelmed. This is understandable. Sexual behavior comes with risks, but there are steps you can take to gain stability in your life right now.
This article will explore these steps, but if you want to talk to someone in person, contact Pregnancy Care Center of Rincon to schedule a free, confidential appointment.
Get STI and Pregnancy Testing
STIs are one of the biggest physical risks of sexual behavior, and condoms can help protect against STIs. If your condom broke, it’s essential to get STI and pregnancy testing to protect your health and gain clarity in your situation.
Why Do I Need STI Testing?
If you are sexually active, it’s critical to get routine STI testing.
Many STIs are asymptomatic, which means they don’t present with symptoms—but they can still be transmitted between you and your partner(s) and cause health and/or pregnancy risks.
At the Pregnancy Care Center of Rincon, we test and treat the two most common STIs: chlamydia and gonorrhea.
While chlamydia and gonorrhea can be asymptomatic, some women might experience:
- Increased vaginal discharge
- Painful urination
- Vaginal bleeding between periods, such as after vaginal intercourse
- Abdominal or pelvic pain
Why Do I Need Pregnancy Testing?
The chance of pregnancy is another consequence of sexual behavior. While early pregnancy can present with symptoms for some women, getting pregnancy testing (and following up with an ultrasound if it’s positive) is the only reliable way to find out if you’re pregnant.
