When it comes to abortion, every state in America has its own specific laws and restrictions. While some states do offer Medicaid coverage for abortion, others have specific requirements.
What Are the Abortion Laws in Georgia?
In Georgia, abortion must be performed by a licensed physician. Abortion is permitted up to 20 weeks, but there’s an exception in cases of life endangerment after 20 weeks. If you’re under the age of eighteen, a parent must be notified before an abortion procedure.
Additionally, Georgia has a “Women’s Right to Know” (WRTK) program that states women can only have an abortion after they have given their voluntary and informed consent. Women must receive information about all options available, and information on abortion procedures and risks at least 24 hours before the scheduled abortion procedure.
Will Georgia Medicaid Pay for Abortion?
Even though abortion is legal up to 20 weeks, Georgia Medicaid will only cover the cost of abortion in certain circumstances. These circumstances include rape, incest, and life endangerment.
How Much Does Abortion Cost?
If you do not meet the above criteria, you will likely have to pay for any abortion costs out of pocket. These costs will include any necessary physician visits before or after the procedure, the procedure itself, and over-the-counter pain medications and supplies. If there’s an emergency, you may also have to pay for an emergency room visit.
The cost of a medical abortion performed up to ten weeks of pregnancy ranges from $350 to $650. Surgical abortion can cost even more, sometimes even over $1,000. This all depends on how far along you are, the type of abortion procedure, and if you’ll need sedation.
