You just got a positive pregnancy test. You did not plan on this and want to get an abortion. Now what?

Three things will need to be completed prior to your abortion appointment:

  1. Lab-quality pregnancy testing
  2. An ultrasound
  3. Consultation regarding your pregnancy decision

Although a home test came back positive, a lab-quality pregnancy test and ultrasound will verify your pregnancy and provide important details that can help you discover your options.

At the Pregnancy Care Center of Rincon, we will confirm your pregnancy with a no-cost pregnancy test and ultrasound.

What Does an Ultrasound Unveil?

1.  Pregnancy Viability

An ultrasound verifies the viability (health and progression) of your pregnancy. This process includes determining if the fetus has a detectable heartbeat. In addition, studies show that up to 20% of known pregnancies end in natural miscarriage. Ultrasounds help you understand exactly what is happening in your uterus, so you can remain healthy while having clarity in making a pregnancy decision.

2. Pregnancy Age

Knowing how far along you are in your pregnancy is vital in understanding your options. The two types of abortion, medical and surgical, rely on gestational age for eligibility.

A medical abortion, also known as the abortion pill, can be taken if you are 70 days (10 weeks) or less from the first day of your last menstrual period. If an ultrasound determines the gestational age is beyond that, a surgical abortion will be the next option.

Both a medical and surgical abortion, like any medical procedure, come with risks and side effects that are necessary to understand. We have equipped medical professionals that are able to discuss the terms of the procedure with you as you navigate your options.

3. Pregnancy Location

Utilizing an ultrasound prior to scheduling your abortion allows various medical complications to be revealed and avoided. For example, a fertilized egg sometimes implants on a fallopian tube rather than the uterine lining. In this case, a medical procedure, different from what is classified as abortion, will be needed to expel the pregnancy as it cannot sustain life and poses a risk to the woman.
